PractitionersWhat VITL Can Do For Health Care Providers In today’s health care system, providers need rapid access to patient information at any time, anywhere. Vermont’s hospitals and some physician practices have begun to use electronic medical records, but a major drawback is that they have limited information about care provided outside their organization. For example, if a patient from Newport travels to Burlington to see a specialist or undergo a hospital procedure, his or her complete medical history from Newport and other locations may not make it to Burlington.
Without knowledge of a patient’s medical history, physicians are forced to request duplicative tests to support their clinical decisionmaking. In addition, public health agencies and providers are demanding information that is critical to identifying, tracking, and responding to health threats ranging from traditional epidemics to deliberate terrorist attacks.
Sharing Real-Time Clinical Information VITL is developing a Vermont health information exchange to share real-time clinical information across the state to improve patient outcomes while reducing service duplication and decreasing the rate at which health care spending occurs. VITL provides a reliable, secure system that provides the right information on the right patient to the right provider at the right time in order to enable more efficient and timely medical care delivery and administration; improve health care quality, safety, and outcomes; decrease costs; and increase patient and citizen satisfaction with health care.
