Joel Benware

Vice President of Information Systems and Compliance
Northwestern Medical Center

Joel Benware serves as the vice president of information systems and compliance at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, VT. In this role Joel has responsibilities for the strategic planning of all data and communications, strategic planning, use and development of the electronic medical record as well as data management and reporting. Under Joel’s leadership Northwestern Medical Center has earned the rank of HIMSS Stage 6 and was recently recognized by the American Hospital Association as being a “Most Wired” Hospital for 2016.

Joel is also the compliance officer at Northwestern Medical Center and also oversees the operations of the Patient Access department, Restaurant and Catering, Environmental Services, Concierge and Volunteer programs. Prior to this role Joel was the chief information officer at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, NY, the chief technology officer at the Albany College of Pharmacy and director of technology for Gaston County Schools in North Carolina. Joel began his career as a middle school teacher for Catawba County Schools in Hickory, NC. 

Joel holds two master’s degrees; Master of Arts in Instructional Technologies from Appalachian State University and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from Champlain College. Joel is certified in healthcare compliance (CHC), a Certified Professional in Health Information Management Systems (CPHIMS) and a Certified Healthcare Chief Information Officer (CHCIO). 

Joel and his wife Tanya reside in St. Albans, VT with their three children. Joel is active in coaching youth sports, boating, skiing and triathlons.
