Database Engineer

Job Description: 

Vermont Information Technology Leaders, Inc. (VITL) is seeking an experienced database engineer to successfully maintain, administer, and improve the Microsoft SQL Server database supporting the Vermont Health Information Exchange (VHIE).

This position reports to the director of technology. The database engineer will also assist in data analysis, system configuration, system selections, installations and technical support.

Responsibilities of this position are:

  • Design, implement, and execute database maintenance regimens.
  • Monitor and improve database performance.
  • Fully support all aspects of the database.
  • Perform root analysis of any and all database incidents.
  • Maintain complex system configurations with high accuracy, analyzing data to develop configuration requirements.
  • Analyze data schemas and database structure to make recommendations for operational improvements.
  • Implement automation and toolsets to increase efficiency of operational tasks and processes to maintain and operate the VHIE database.
  • Utilize a structured methodology to plan and implement projects.
  • Work with all levels of VITL staff and leadership, external consultants, the health care community, vendors, and customers to solve the needs of both internal and external VHIE clients.
  • Mentor staff on certain projects and perform staff education on the various aspects of the database.

This is a full-time permanent position requiring the following skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field.
  • 5+ years relevant database experience.
  • Extensive experience working with large Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • Experience with SQL snapshotting, query and performance optimization, and replication and recovery.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • 3+ years as a Microsoft SQL Server database administrator.
  • Experience with stored procedures on multiple platforms, scripting for automation and integration.
  • Strong knowledge of relational database design and technical principles, including data dictionaries, data glossaries, data models, etc.
  • Experience as a database/SQL programmer.
  • Experience using and developing SQL Server Integration Services.
  • Familiarity with data governance.
  • Knowledge and experience with HL7, CCD, XML, CSV, IHE profiles, SFTP, SSL, SSH, REST desirable.
  • Demonstrated business and clinical knowledge with experience in healthcare preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage, and optimize highly detailed, demanding, and technical tasks.
  • Team-oriented attitude, thrives in a collaborative environment.
