VITL Offers Free VITLDirect Webinar on July 29

Release Date:
July 24th, 2014

BURLINGTON, VT – To enable health care providers to securely send clinical information for the patients they are treating, Vermont Information Technology Leaders (VITL) has launched VITLDirect, a messaging system that electronically sends and receives patient data. VITL’s ehealth specialists will host a free webinar for health care providers and medical staff on July 29 at 12 p.m. to learn more about adding VITLDirect to electronic health record systems, or as a stand-alone, secure email option for communicating patient information to other providers.

The VITLDirect secure communication system uses the national technical standard for sending and receiving health information known as the Direct project. It functions like regular email with additional security measures to ensure that messages are only accessible to the intended recipient, per the protection regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). For example, with VITLDirect, a primary care physician can share recent test results with a referring specialist in advance of a patient’s scheduled appointment.

VITLDirect can be utilized to communicate among providers involved in a patient’s transition of care from a hospital to a rehabilitation or long term care facility. This functionality will help hospitals and eligible providers achieve meaningful use, and also improve coordination of care.
